The study aimed to identify the implementation level of transitional services for secondary students with learning disabilities (LD) and reveal the perspectives of teachers and supervisors of LD students towards the implementation of these services for students with LD in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. For the purpose of the current study. Mixed method approach was applied with its sequential explanatory design, and it was implemented in two stages: i) collecting quantitative data by applying the questionnaire tool to 89 teachers and supervisors of LD, and ii) collecting qualitative data by using the semi-structured interview with 7 teachers and supervisors of LD. The qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the quantitative data showed a high implementation level of transitional services for LD students as perceived by the sample members. The dimension of self-determination skills ranked first, followed by professional preparation, whereas the dimension of accommodating curricula and teaching methods to meet the transitional goals came last. The qualitative data results revealed a consensus among the participants on the importance of implementing transitional services for LD students. They also stated that transitional services are implemented through individual initiatives, but lack many applied practices, such as preparing a transition plan that meets the students’ desires and needs due to the unawareness of the concept of transitional services and the procedures of their implementation. Furthermore, the participants affirmed that the regulations for transitional services are not applied in the programs of LD students in the secondary stage. The results revealed many challenges, most notably: the need for teachers of LD students for training, the unclear procedures for implementing transitional services, the problems facing LD students when moving beyond secondary school, and the poor community partnership. Considering these results, the researcher recommended, the need to develop professional diplomas and master’s programs in the field of transitional services, to enhance the skills of teachers and supervisor of LD on how to prepare and design transitional plans, and to activate regulations for implementing transitional services as a basic service for LD students in the secondary stage. |
