This is a Master’s thesis in Holy Book and prophet Hadith (Tradition) major specialization
Title of Thesis: AL-BAGHAWI’S QUESTION’S IN HIS TAFSIR "MAALIM AL-TANZIL" FROM SURAT AL-FATIHAH UNTIL SURAT AL-MAIDAH
In this thesis, we included an account of Imam Al-Baghawī (May Allah have Mercy upon him), his Quranic Exegesis, entitled Ma‘ālim al-Tanzīl (Landmarks of Revelation), a study of the queries raised by scholars in general and by Imam Al-Baghawī in particular, his approach in the compilation thereof and his answers thereto with special emphasis on the compilation and study of forty two queries in connection with Quranic Surahs from Surat AlFatiha to Surat AlMaidah.
This thesis consists of an introduction, a preface, two sections and a conclusion.
Introduction: The introduction contains the research problem, queries, objectives, significance, selection and limits, as well as an account of my approach in connection herewith, writing methodology employed therein, as well as an account of previous studies.
Preface: The preface includes an account of the works of Imam Al-Baghawī with particular emphasis upon his Quranic Exegesis, entitled Ma‘ālim al-Tanzīl (Landmarks of Revelation)
First Section: A theoretical study over two chapters of which the first chapter (which consists of two themes and five topics) is concerned with the queries raised by scholars in general in terms of the definition, origin, format, types and benefits thereof, while the second chapter (which consists of four themes) is concerned with the queries raised by Imam Al-Baghawī in particular in terms of the format, types and methodology thereof and the answers thereto.
Second Section: An applied study, compiling forty two queries raised by Imam Al-Baghawī in his Quranic Exegesis, entitled Ma‘ālim al-Tanzīl (Landmarks of Revelation), indicating the crux of the question, mentioning any counterparts in other verses –if any, listing arguments supporting the answers put forth by Imam Al-Baghawī, naming supporting and opposing interpreters and indicating the most preponderant arguments if possible.
The most significant results achieved through this study are as follows:
1-Queries were first raised in the works authored by scholars of the latter part of second Hijri century, being an ancient academic method commonly found in works authored by scholars of various disciplines and specialties.
2-Queries provide many benefits, including the pure thrill of academic research, development of intellect and thinking methodology by accustoming the researcher to analysis and deduction in addition to the thrill and excitement experienced by the reader in whose mind such fine points and anecdotes are more likely to be indelibly etched to name just a few benefits.
3-The majority of the queries and answers set forth by Imam Al-Baghawī in his Quranic Exegesis, entitled Ma‘ālim al-Tanzīl (Landmarks of Revelation) are quoted from other scholars.
4- Imam Al-Baghawī quoted queries and answers by AlThaalabi, AlWahidy and AlSamaani
5-Queries and answers are som times quoted verbatim by Imam Al-Baghawī and at other times paraphrased thereby.
Key Recommendations:
1-Conducting an extensive study of the queries set forth in Al-Baghawī’s Quranic Exegesis, entitled Ma‘ālim al-Tanzīl (Landmarks of Revelation) in their respective original sources, since most of the queries set forth in Al-Baghawī’s Quranic Exegesis are quoted from the works of other scholars.
2-Comparing Al-Baghawī’s Quranic Exegesis with those authored by scholars such as AlSamaany and indicating how much was Al-Baghawī’s Quranic Exegesis influenced thereby. |
