Abstract
:
The present work is focused on the experimental study of flame dynamics in preheated mesoscale straight channels of various aspect ratios (2, 5, 12 and 15). Laminar CH4- air premixed flames were stabilized inside these channels. The flames were stabilized at different temperatures and locations inside the mesoscale straight channels by placing an external electric heater beneath the channel and overlap gap maintained at 20mm respectively. The stabilized planar flame was independent of any stretch effect. The experiments were carried out for a range of equivalence ratio, (0.8≤ Φ ≤ 1.2) and temperature ranging from 600-900K. A detailed study is carried out to understand the velocity and temperature distributions and flame propagation inside the preheated straight channels of various aspect ratios. External preheating of these channels stabilizes the flames inside the channels for a range of inlet velocities and mixture equivalence ratios. Various flame propagation modes were observed. Based on the structure of the flames they are classified as concave flames with respect to unburned mixture which are called slow propagating flames, convex flames with respect to unburned mixture which are called fast propagating flames and planar flames which are flat shaped. Convex flames with very low inlet velocities lead to flashback whereas concave flames with high inlet velocities lead to a blowout. With a constant flow velocity but increase in aspect ratio leads to a flame flashback whereas decrease in aspect ratio lead to blow-off. The detailed parametric studies on the formation of various flame propagation modes, their regime diagrams, the effect of inlet mixture velocity and effect of equivalence ratio Ф are presented. Detailed numerical simulations were also carried out in Aziz supercomputer. The experimental and numerical results matched qualitatively. This study concludes that planar flames are formed inside smaller aspect ratio channels ≤ 12Λ.
