Abstract
:
This study tackles the institutional repository (IR) subject within the Saudi Universities. The lack of the digital institutional repositories and lack of its spread are the motive behind conducting this study in the first place. This study aims to visualize a vision to come up with a national project for supporting establishing, managing and developing digital institutional repositories within the Saudi Universities, this aim will be achieved through recognizing the fact and reality of existing institutional repositories, the Saudi Universities tendency considering establishing institutional repositories and the faculty members tendency for establishing these repositories in their Universities besides their contribution regarding their scientific productions in this repositories. Furthermore this study aims to recognize the roles that the deanship library affairs may perform and the effecting factors regarding establishing institutional repositories in Saudi Universities. The researcher used the multi case studies method in order to recognize the previous experiments dealing with establishing and managing institutional repositories by conducting a number of interviews with those who are responsible for these institutional repositories, Moreover, the researcher used the descriptive survey method in order to recognize the Saudi Universities tendencies on establishing IR through a questionnaire that has been distributed to deanship library affairs. Likewise the researcher used the descriptive survey method to recognize faculty member’s tendency through a questionnaire that was designed for that purpose. The study revealed some results such as existence of defects and sometimes absence of the libraries role along with its specialties regarding being in charge of the existing IRs in Saudi Universities, also the study reveals that there are a positive moves towards adopting initials for establishing IR besides making an actual planning for that purpose. Most of the faculty members support establishing IRs in the Universities and they are interested in contributing by depositing their scientific productions in IRs if they were established. One of the most recommendations of this study is the necessity for developing the existing IRs in the Saudi Universities along with the necessity regarding library affairs deanships for developing their efficiencies and capacities whether technically or technologically in order to be responsible for implementing institutional repository Initiatives. Finally these recommendations call for assuring on the necessity of providing national or institutional policies regarding open access (OA), for supporting its ideas besides motivate to implement and achieve its objectives.
