Abstract
:
The seismic analysis and design of reinforced concrete buildings can be considered a specialist field of study. This field involves requirements and concepts, such as ductility, which are not normally dealt with when designing for gravity or wind loads. In addition, seismic design is complicated somewhat by great uncertainties which surround the estimation of the appropriate design loading and the capacity of structural elements and connections. Additionally, uncertainties are associated with the selection of the mathematical models which represent the structure behavior; and the shape and intensity of the design earthquakes. Thus, the earthquake design requires extensive knowledge of conceptual design of structures, mathematical models and analysis assumptions used in structural analysis programs, and good element detailing. This paper describes the seismic design methodology that is employed in an expert system SDA (Seismic Design Assistant). Also, it gives description of SDA including its architecture, knowledge representation, and external interface to finite element analysis programs. The system has been implemented on a SUN SPARC station using Quintec-Prolog, Quintec-Flex and FORTRAN 77. The expert system has been used to design a 10 story coupled shear wall subjected to earthquake input motion.
