The increase of oil revenue affected the performance of the Saudi Arabian
economy in many aspects. Among the most affected are the demand for cars, the growth
of residential sector and urban expansion. The city of Jeddah came to embody these
changes due to its size and the center for many car agents. This study is concerned with
estimating the demand for private cars in Jeddah, as a function of home type, some of
its characteristics, and some of the socio–economic characteristics of households. The
data used were drawn from a random sample of families resident in Jeddah. Homes are
classified into three categories: public homes, apartments, and villas.
Using (OLS), two demand functions were estimated. The first model estimated
the demand for cars as a function of socio–economic characteristics of households and
home type, while the second model used the same socio–economic characteristics and
home type characteristics in estimating the demand for cars. The results supported most
of our expectations. It is found that the factors affecting demand in the first model are
yearly household income, number of children, number of derive license holders, Saudis,
Arabians, Asian, and the family lives in a villa. Meanwhile, results of the second model
showed that the most factors affecting demand for families are resident in public homes,
yearly household income, number of drivers license holders, family holds Arabian
nationality, head of family works at public and private sector, number of rooms, and
home is allocated in any category of the three districts categories assigned in this study.
The demand for families resident in apartments is affected by yearly household income,
number of drivers license holders, number of children, head of the family works at public
and private sector, number of rooms, amount of yearly rant, and the apartment is
allocated in middle and nearly high classification of districts. Finally, demand for
families resident in villas is affected by yearly household income, car price, age of head
of family, number of derive license holders, number of children, family holds Saudi
nationality, head of the family works at public and private sector, amount of yearly rant,
villa is owned, and the apartment is allocated in meddle class of district. |
