Empirical evidence has shown that burnout has important dysfunctional
ramifications, implying substantial costs for both organizations and individuals because of,
for example, increase in turnover, absenteeism, reduced productivity, and human
considerations. It is a unique type of stress syndrome, characterized by emotional
exhaustion, depersonalization, and diminshed personal accomplishment.
The main objective of this study is to determine the level of burnout among employees
working in public service organizations, to investigate the factors contributing to burnout,
and to discuss how to deal with it . This study also aims to distinguish between those
suffering from high or low level of burnout according to background and administrative
variables. Non-random sample of (376) employees was drawn from public service
organizations in Jeddah city.
The study found a moderate level of burnout and there were six factors which contributed to
employee burnout. These factors were : organizational sources, job demands, role
characteristics, interpersonal relations, social support, and personal expectations. Other
results are discussed and recommendations are proposed. |
