Abstract
:
AFlSTRACT. Tellurite glasses containing CuO with the nominal composition (CuO), (Te02)j.,. where x = 0.30. 0.40 and 0.50, have been prepared and investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), The Spectra of the core levels Cu 2p, Te 3d, and 0 Is in these glasses have been measured. The appearance 0 f a sa tellilc peak in the Cu 2p core level spectra prov ides definit ive evidence for the presence of Cu~ I ions in these glass samples where the asymmetry and broadening of the peaks are indicative of the presence of bnth eu"· and Cu ions, The broadened Cu 2p:k~ peaks were decomposed into two distinct peaks separated by approximately 2.0 eV, with the lower energy peak being associated with Cu I and the higher energy peak with Cu~· . The relative Cuc- content determined from the relative areas under these peaks and the satellite peak is found to vary from 40% for the x = 0,50 glass sample to over 90% for the x = 0.30 sample. The 0 Is spectra for all values of x show slight asymmetry and were therefore filled with two contributions, one from bridging oxygen (I30) and the other from non-bridging oxygen (NBO). The I30 signal is due to the presence of oxygen atoms in the environment Te-O-Tc. while the NI30 is due to oxygen atoms in the environment Te-O-Cu . The ratio NBO/loial oxygen was evaluated for cacb glass and was found to be in good agreement with the theoretical values calculated from the glass composition. The Te 3d core level spectra show symmetry for all values of .r and indicate tbat the ehemical environment ofTe atoms does not vary much with x values .
